Tomorrowland is still a mystery to most moviegoers. Little is known about Brad Bird and George Clooney’s upcoming collaboration, and while it’s taken a while for the film to find traction, which is frankly down to the secrecy surrounding the project, the first images to emerge of the sci-fi adventure prove that it doesn’t lack ambition, and, even though we’ve only seen three images, it’s hard not to have already fallen in love with its visuals.
Entertainment Weekly shared three images for the film, along with some details about the plot. George Clooney plays the lead, a grizzled inventor by the name of Frank Walker, who is now a hermit, opposite Britt Robertson’s Casey Newton, who has long dreamed of the future. After watching the launch-pads of Cape Canaveral being dissembled one day she goes exploring and suddenly comes across a mysterious pin, which when she touches reveals a vision of a better world, the concept art for which you can see above. However it’s only a fleeting glimpse, but this starts her quest and, alongside, Walker, she goes out to try and find the real Tomorrowland. Sounds intriguing, and with Brad Bird, George Clooney, and Damon Lindelof, who wrote Lost, Prometheus and The Leftovers, involved you can certainly see why. When you couple this with the new spate of images it already looks certain to be a corker. Just to whet your whistle, you can check out a quick peek at Robertson’s Casey, standing in a cornfield in front of a futuristic backdrop.
According to Brad Bird, there's a major question to be considered right from the start...
"We begin our movie asking what did [the future] used to be? What’s good about the future and what’s scary about it? And we wrestle with those things in a slightly mythical way."
Further details for Tomorrowland, which took its title from Disneyland’s "futuristic attraction", have been teased courtesy of Lindelof, who declared, "What Hogwarts is to magic, Tomorrowland is to science." Once again using a Harry Potter analogy, Lindelof then looked to provide more information on the magical pin that transports Casey to this mysterious yet alluring location. "There is a piece of technology in this pin, it’s the kind of old-school pin you would wear on your lapel, and when you make physical contact with it, you have the illusion of being physically transported to another world, and that’s how Casey gets her first glimpse of Tomorrowland," Lindelof explained. "She is a Muggle who accidentally wanders across Platform 9 ¾ and sees something she probably shouldn’t have."
Harry Potter references aside, Tomorrowland looks like one of the most enchanting and beguiling movies of the next 12 months, and thanks to the new images, as well as George Clooney, Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof and Hugh Laurie’s involvement, you can’t help but be excited ahead of its May 22, 2015, release.
