Alex Garland’s feature helming debut, Ex Machina, was picked up for U.S. distribution by A24 on Wednesday, just in time for the first trailer to drop. Garland, who penned 28 Days Later and Sunshine, also wrote the psychological thriller that stars Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander.
Gleeson plays a 24-year-old coder at the world’s largest Internet company who wins a competition to spend a week at a retreat belonging to the company’s reclusive CEO (Isaac).
But when he arrives, he finds that he is participating in an experiment with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot woman (Vikander). Her emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, seductive and deceptive than the two men could have imagined. The trailer above looks similar to one I saw in Barcelona this summer where the reception was positive. A24 has set an April 10 release while the film will start rolling out overseas via Universal Pictures International in January, beginning with the UK. DNA’s Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich produced, and Scott Rudin and Eli Bush executive produced with former Film4 head Tessa Ross.
