It was Valentine's weekend where a LOT of men had their ladies do the choosing - and the ladies might have been a bit curious after all the hype generated for the movie.
For that reason alone the actual audience probably did not accurately reflect the interest. Then one might want to consider that there were no other highly hyped releases - no real competition, was there ? Let's see how much staying power the movie has and whether Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson emerge as superstars who will be in consideration for some serious movies (requiring some REAL, honest-to-goodness acting) for years to come.
