I can think of only one movie I've seen that was actually BETTER than the book -- "Forrest Gump". As much as I dislike the liberal tool that Tom Hanks is, he actually breathed life into the otherwise two-dimensional character penned in the novel.

Some good book-to-film conversions I can think of are "A Clockwork Orange", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and a couple of Vonnegut books made movies, "Slaughterhouse Five" and "Mother Night".

The worst, off the top of my head, was the film version of "A Time To Kill" -- they completely skewed major plot points of the book making the film laughably contrived.
