Sex and the City may live again. Jennifer Hudson made some comments recently that indicate that another sequel to the films may be in the works. It may be safe to file this one under tentative, for the time being, but from what Hudson says, there's been talk of another movie.
According to MTV, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson recently told Dish Nation that she thinks another Sex and the City movie might be happening.
"Somebody just came to me talking about that," she said, not specifying who brought the topic up. "So if it's in the talks, it might happen. So look for it."We have no doubt that people will be looking for it, and hopefully we'll hear more specific updates on this potentially huge news from some of the leads in the TV series and the two films that followed. The first Sex and the City film was one of Jennifer Hudson's first feature film credits. Of course, the former American Idol contestant had already bagged herself an Academy Award for Dreamgirls by the time we saw her as Louise from St. Louis in Sex and the City. She didn't reprise the role for the 2010 sequel, but did perform a song for it.
Does Sex and the City need another sequel? We could argue that it didn't really need the second one, especially given how nicely the 2008 film wrapped up the story. Personally, I don't know why they'd do another movie. As great as the characters are, I'd rather they let the story rest, especially if the next followup involves another scenario involving Carrie and Big's relationship on the verge of collapse. But maybe I'm just that much not a fan of the second one to have much of an appetite for another film.
Alas, people love Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, and just the thought that there might be an update on what's going on in their lives is likely to pique fans' curiosity. At this point though, as we said, the update is vague.. But Hudson's comments may generate enough buzz to squeeze some bigger updates or possibly even confirmation that Sex and the City 3 is actually happening. The series and films starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, with Christopher Noth playing Carrie's primary love interest, Mr. Big.
While the films are relatively recent -- the first one releasing in 2008 and Sex and the City 2 coming to us in 2010 -- the series has actually been off the air for an entire decade, having wrapped up in February of 2004. With that much time between the TV show's finale and now, it wouldn't be entirely surprising to hear word that someone was trying to reboot the successful TV show, either for the big or small screen. I'm not saying it should happen, but it wouldn't be surprising. Of course, an argument could be made that Girls is today's Sex and the City, as it does focus on a small group of female friends navigating life and dating in New York. But the characters in Lena Dunham's HBO comedy are significantly younger than the thirty-somethings who took center stage in Darren Star's series. In that respect, the perspective is pretty different.
There was also the short-lived Sex and the City prequel series, which aired on the CW. Like the original series, The Carrie Diaries was based on the writings of Candace Bushnell. The Carrie Diaries aired for two seasons before being cancelled earlier this year. So perhaps the appetite for more Carrie Bradshaw is on the rise, in which case, a sequel may be just the ticket.
