New ‘Jurassic World’ Image: Raptor Photobombs Chris Pratt

With more than six months left until the release of the newest installment to the Jurassic Park franchise, Universal Pictures has already begun the big roll out of Jurassic World marketing. In recent weeks a viral site for the film was launched, and the first full length trailer debuted – to mixed reactions.

Director Colin Trevorrow followed up on the trailer reveal by offering some insights into certain scenes from the footage, including that in which Owen (Chris Pratt) is seen riding his motorcycle along with a group of raptors.

Trevorrow assured fans that Owen has by no means ‘tamed’ the raptors – instead, he related Pratt’s character to the people that work with dangerous predators in a real world setting. While Owen and the raptors may not be friends, a new image certainly shows that under certain circumstances (and in certain seasons) the two are capable of coexisting.

In the midst of editing Jurassic World, Trevorrow released a new photo of Owen and one of the raptors on Twitter. As evidenced by Trevorrow’s accompanying message, the photo simply seems to be a gift to Jurassic Park fans – just in time for the holidays.

Trevorrow has explained in the past the basic premise of Jurassic World that attracted him to the project: if scientists really could recreate dinosaurs in today’s world, it likely wouldn’t be enough. It would only be a matter of time until they took a step farther, genetically engineering a brand new dinosaur. Since then, Trevorrow also expressed interest in exploring Owen’s work in the study of raptor behavior, and could be – perhaps – a more compelling aspect of the movie.

While the broad strokes of Jurassic World largely resemble those of Jurassic Park (“God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs…”), the relationship between Owen and the raptors, no matter how tenuous, opens up territory where the franchise has not yet ventured. Viewers have never seen what it means for humans and dinosaurs to coexist, but Owen’s work may allow for some insight.

And some action scenes. Plenty of those.

Additionally, the raptor in this new photo appears to be similar to those used in Steven Spielberg’s original film – that is, a practical model as opposed to CGI. Jurassic Park is still lauded for creating realistic-looking dinosaurs with the technology of the time (that has stood the passing years quite well), but the Jurassic World trailer received criticism for what some perceived as overuse of CGI. Perhaps Trevorrow’s photo is a hint that more practical effects will appear in the final film than previously thought.

At the very least, fans can hope that the CGI will be better than the effects that appeared in the trailer.

Jurassic World hits theaters June 12th, 2015.
